Green Restaurants and Food Businesses

The restaurant and food service industry is the biggest U.S. employer after the government. It’s also a high-energy industry and generates tremendous amounts of food waste and paper trash. Making the industry greener will have a significant positive impact on the country’s environmental sustainability.

The restaurant industry is already starting to make changes. The National Restaurant Association has formed a Board of Directors Green Task Force to implement its environmental practices initiative. There will be several environmentally-focused sessions on the menu at this year’s National Restaurant, Hotel-Motel show.

In Savannah, Georgia, there’s a McDonald’s restaurant that was built with green building materials and equipment—showing that the green-building model can work for the tens of thousands of fast-food restaurants nationwide.

These pages provide suggestions and resources to help your business go greener. One overall resource is The Green Restaurant Association. This non-profit provides restaurant members with hands-on assistance in going green—extremely helpful to harried restaurants and food service owners and managers.
